14.30 Bus leaves ICTP (from Adriatico Guesthouse) toward Aquileia
15.30 Aquileia: guided visit (by T.B. Nielsen and R. Gertwagen) to the National Museum of Archaeology, the Basilica, the tower and the river port
19.30 Social Dinner at the “Agriturismo Antico Monastero di Beligna”
Aquileia is a famous Roman site 40 km far from Trieste. It was established in 181 BC as a militar settlement and became one of the ten most important towns of the Roman empire, not only for its military prowess and its economic wealth, but also for its cultural and spiritual magnificence. Aquileia was destroyed by Attila in the mid-5th century.
Since 1998 Aquileia is part of the UNESCO World Heritage. The Patriarchal Basilica, whose origins date back to the early 4th century, is an outstanding building with an exceptional mosaic pavement, that played a key role in the evangelization of a large region of central Europe.
